A VITEM IV is granted to foreign citizens who go to Brazil as students in undergraduate, graduate, and technical courses, including those of religious formation, for a period not exceeding one year.

In order to apply for a VITEM IV, applicants must present, in addition to the documents listed in General Requirements:

1. proof of financial resources to subsist in Brazil;
   
2. proof of enrolment or of vacancy in the pertinent learning institution; and
   
3. certificate of no criminal record or its local equivalent.

A VITEM IV is valid for up to 1 (one ) year and it may be extended in Brazil by request addressed to the Maritime, Aerial and Borders Police Division (PMAF) within 30 days prior to its date of expiry. Requests for extension must include proof of academic performance and declaration from the learning institution confirming enrolment in the new academic period.

If the bearer of a VITEM IV leaves Brazil without renewing it and decides to request its renewal directly to the Consular Section, he or she will have to:

1. once more submit the requested documentation;
   
2. include proof of enrolment in the new academic year and certificate of academic performance for the completed period, and
   
3. pay the corresponding fee.

 

If a student comes to the Consular Section with an expired VITEM IV plus proof that he or she requested its renewal in Brazil, the Consular Section may grant him or her a Tourist Visa in order to enable the student to receive the extended VITEM IV from the Maritime, Aerial and Borders Police Division (DPMAF).

The Consular Section can only process VITEM IV applications for people who have been residing within its jurisdiction for at least one year.

In order to register with the Maritime, Aerial and Borders Police Division (DPMAF), bearers of VITEM IV will receive one copy of the Visa Application Form. Bearers of VITEM IV must register with the Ministry of Justice within 30 (thirty) days of their date of arrival.
