GENERAL REQUIREMENTS APPLICABLE TO ALL TYPES OF VISAS

In order to enter Brazil, a foreign citizen must present:

  1. a travel document valid for at least six months issued either by a foreign Government or by an international organization recognized by the Brazilian Government,

  2. International Certificate of Immunization, when required and

  3. entry visa granted by a Brazilian Diplomatic Mission, Consular Office, Vice-Consulate and, when authorized by the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations, Honorary Consulates. The entry visa is granted upon submission of a completed Visa Application Form.

Visa applications must be submitted overseas, directly to the Consular Offices. All visas, except for entry visas, are granted with multiple entries, unless instruction to the contrary.

The entry visa, even when authorized by the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations, represents only an exception of right. The actual entry of a foreigner in Brazil and his or her stay in the country can be restrained by a decision of the Ministry of Justice, executed through the Maritime, Aerial and Borders Police Division (DPMAF), whenever deemed convenient for the national interest.

The entry visa is per individual. If more than one traveler are on the same travel document, the Consular Section will grant a visa for the main holder of the travel document and as many visas as there are dependants registered in the travel document. Brazilian law has no provisions for collective visas.

The Consular Section will not grant visas to Brazilian nationals who are bearers of a foreign travel document or who are included as dependants in a foreign travel document. The Brazilian national must enter and leave Brazil bearing a Brazilian travel document, except when local legislation does not allow any person to leave the country without a visa to Brazil. Whenever necessary, the Consular Authority will issue a passport in favor of Brazilian nationals.

In some cases, consultation with the Ministry of External Relations prior to granting a visa is mandatory. Replies to these consultations are valid for six months for all types of visas.

All consular visas are to be used within 90 (ninety) days of the date of issue.
