Applications for these types of visas must be submitted by Verbal Note from the local Department of Foreign Affairs, foreign Diplomatic Mission, or international organization or agency.
Diplomatic and Official Visas are valid for multiple entries.
Diplomatic Visas may be granted to foreign authorities and officials and to officials from international organizations that have diplomatic status and are travelling to Brazil on a transitory or permanent basis.
Courtesy Visas may be granted to foreign authorities and personalities who visit Brazil on non-official travel for periods up to 90 (ninety) days. Courtesy Visas may also be granted to dependants older than 21, to domestic employees of diplomatic officials, administrative officials, and foreign technicians appointed to permanent missions in Brazil and to the domestic employees of those employed by the Brazilian Ministry of External Relation when returning from official mission overseas. In all cases, the entity or person to whom the beneficiary of a Courtesy Visa is linked must take the necessary steps to assist the bearer of such a visa to leave Brazil when the reasons that justified the granting of this visa are terminated.
Any remunerated activity is expressly forbidden for the bearer of a Courtesy Visa, except when it is done in favour of a foreign State, an international organization or agency that the bearer is serving, or of the Brazilian government, when an international instrument contains specific provisions about the matter. The domestic employee is allowed to exercise remunerated activity in the private service of bearers of Diplomatic, Official, or Courtesy Visas.
Diplomatic and Official Visas are granted a maximum validity of two years, extended by bilateral agreement on a reciprocity basis. Courtesy Visas are granted with a maximum validity of one year.
Within 30 (thirty) days of their date of arrival, bearers of Diplomatic, Official, and Courtesy Visas valid for longer than 90 (ninety) days must request the competent registration with either the Division of Consular Assistance, the Division of Immigration or the Ceremonial Division of the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations through the Diplomatic Mission of their country or through the Office of the international organization to which they are attached.
Upon request from the Diplomatic Mission or the Office of the international organization to which the applicant is attached the Brazilian Ministry of External Relations will renew the Diplomatic, Official or Courtesy Visa for the duration of the bearer’s mission.
